U.S. Expats: Your Federal Tax Filing Deadline Is June 16, 2025

If you're a U.S. citizen or resident alien living abroad, your tax season isn’t over yet. While most taxpayers face the usual April 15 filing deadline, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) automatically grants U.S. expats a two-month extension, giving you until June 16, 2025, to file your 2024 federal income tax return and pay any taxes owed.

At Bizora, we specialize in helping global entrepreneurs, digital nomads, and remote U.S. workers stay compliant with federal and state tax laws—even across borders.

Who Qualifies for the Expat Tax Filing Extension?

The automatic extension applies to:

  • U.S. citizens or resident aliens living outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico

  • Taxpayers whose principal place of business or post of duty is outside the United States

You do not need to file a separate request (such as Form 4868) to get this automatic extension.

Key Filing Responsibilities for U.S. Expats

Despite living overseas, American taxpayers are required to file U.S. tax returns and report worldwide income. Key responsibilities include:

  • Filing Form 1040 for federal income tax

  • Reporting foreign bank accounts via FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) if balances exceed $10,000

  • Filing Form 8938 for foreign assets under FATCA (if applicable)

  • Claiming exclusions or credits, like the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555) or Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116), to reduce or offset double taxation

How to File U.S. Taxes from Abroad

There are multiple ways to file your U.S. taxes while living abroad:

  1. E-file via IRS-Authorized Providers: Many major platforms (like TurboTax or TaxAct) support international filers.

  2. Use Direct Pay or EFTPS: You can pay any owed taxes online from overseas.

  3. Mail returns to the IRS: If you prefer physical filings, send to the appropriate IRS processing center for international taxpayers.

Tip: Make sure your address and bank information are accurate to avoid delays with refunds or correspondence.

Still Need More Time? File Form 4868

If June 16 isn’t enough time, expats can request an additional extension to October 15, 2025 by submitting Form 4868 before the June deadline. However, this does not extend your time to pay—any owed taxes are still due by June 16 to avoid interest charges.
